Historic Nevada City

Nevada city, “the queen city of the northern mines” became a town of 10,000-16,000 in the early 1850’s following the discovery of gold on deer creek in 1849. Here is located the largest and best preserved historical downtown district in the California gold country. Civic leaders named the town Nevada, Spanish for “snow-covered,” in 1850. The town's name was later changed to Nevada City after its title was borrowed by the state to the east. A place “Where the past is always present”, Nevada City’s entire 90 building downtown historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This walking tour of Nevada City will let you experience some gold rush history.
